Stay Ahead of Summer Heat: Protect Your Industrial Electronics

7/16/2025

In this first Expert Series article, Jerry Pennington, a Business Development Manager of Services and Solutions for McNaughton-McKay and a certified HOFFMAN Meridian Specialist, shares his experience with HOFFMAN’s free thermal audit program.

HOFFMAN has aligned its services, products and distributor partners into strategic areas to serve the industrial, commercial construction, data communications and automation markets. Each of these markets are supported by McNaughton-McKay and The Reynolds Company with specific products and a HOFFMAN Meridian specialist on staff. The specialist has gone through HOFFMAN’s advanced cooling training and is an expert in heat load calculations. My first training was in September 2022 and I have completed several factory and advanced cooling training classes. As McNaughton-McKay Georgia’s HOFFMAN Meridian Specialist, I have personally performed thousands of thermal audits over the years and put together thermal audit reports for customers across many industries.

Currently, we are amid the thermal audit season. It is getting really hot outside, so just think about how hot automation components are getting! Industrial electronics can easily overheat from high temperatures. If your components are constantly overheating and need to be regularly replaced, if your machines, A/Cs or lines are down, it’s time to get the information that will help you get your operations back on track. To keep your machines running optimally and avoid costly downtime before it happens, you need an inside look at the operating temperatures of your components to see if the cooling solutions you currently have in place are keeping up with the heat of Summer.

Constantly having to keep enclosure doors open and using external products like fans to keep enclosures cool is a sure sign that it’s time for a thermal audit. As I always tell my customers, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” A thermal audit is the first step in avoiding damage to your electronic devices, providing the hard data you need to make calculated decisions on critical components. From there, you can outfit your enclosures with filter fans and other cooling solutions to keep this from being a problem every summer.

I perform these audits and provide reports to customers completely free of charge. I let the customer know where they stand regarding protecting critical components. There are times when the customer will act quickly or use the information to plan for capital improvements. There are times when the customer has all of the proper cooling they need, and what we are offering with thermal audits is peace of mind. More often than not, we bring data to the customer to show them where critical failures can occur and how they can avoid such failures.
